Activities
Each Saturday at the Sacred Heart Cathedral at Hamilton at 10.00 am, there is a liturgy for a Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour. The Redemptorist Priests conducted a Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour from their monastery in Mayfield for many years until 2003, when the monastery was closed, and our Parish Priest began conducting the Novena at the Sacred Heart Cathedral.
The Novena is a popular devotion. Each week many people bring their petitions to the Novena and also their prayers of thanks for favours received. Any Saturday will find about 150 people coming to the Novena from all over the Diocese.
A shrine, with an icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour has been established in the west transcept of the Cathedral. Petitions and Thanksgivings may be placed in boxes at the shrine or sent to the Parish Office for sending to the Novena. Petitions may be read out unless the petitioner has indicated that they should remain private. If you would like to submit a Petition or Thanksgiving using a form, please download and print the Novena Petition and Thanksgiving form, complete it and sent it to the Parish Office: 25 Farquhar St The Junction 2291. Alternatively, you may submit your Petition or Thanksgiving using the online form which goes to the Parish Office and is then sent to the Novena. You may indicate on the form if you want it to remain private.
The original icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour is a welcoming image of Our Lady bearing in her arms Jesus, the Word Incarnate, as the little King who is Lord of Lords, was painted in Crete in the fifteenth century. It was placed in a private chapel for safekeeping after Napoleon's invasion of Rome (1799) and placed back into public veneration in 1866 at the Redemptorists’ church of Sant’ Alfonso, near St. Mary Major’s basilica in Rome.
Novena memories over sixty year are an important part of our Region's Catholic heritage.
