Faith Formation Groups
St Benedict's offers a number of ways for parishioners, and others, to grow in their relationship with Jesus and their understanding of the Christian faith:
‘Faith Matters’ Group
To facilitate and support learning about and sharing thoughts on matters of faith and to facilitate the deepening of knowledge about our faith.
The Parish Office, 02 4979 1101
We are a small group in the Parish which feels that ‘Faith Matters’ is a good way of describing what we are about. It says that we are people for whom our faith matters, who are interested in learning about and sharing our thoughts on matters of faith, and who would like to facilitate the deepening of knowledge about our faith.
Our main activities include discussion, prayer and scripture reflection, as well as participating in and sharing information about faith development initiatives with our community.
We recognise that faith development is a life-long process, and is, therefore, an ongoing need for people of all ages. The group especially aims to foster interest and sharing about faith matters and adult faith development within the Parish and to respond to the deep spiritual thirst for learning more about their faith felt by so many.
Meetings are advertised in the Weekly Bulletin and also on the Parish website.
Parishioners of St Benedict’s and anyone from surrounding parishes are welcome as a member of our Faith Matters group. We are a small group of about five to ten people, but newcomers are most welcome.
This group has a long history with the parish. Originally known as the Adult Faith Formation group, it formed in 1998 following a decision of the Newcastle Parish Assembly on 16 November 1997. In 2007, recognising that there was no other similar group in what became the St Benedict’s Parish or the broader City Region, we opened membership more broadly. In 2012, as the group looked to revitalise, it expressed this in a name change, adopting a name which better expressed what we are about.
Social Justice Group
Social justice is a central aspect of Catholic teaching. There are endless numbers of situations where social justice issues are important.
The Social Justice Group aims to engage the Parish community in social justice, as part of the life of the Catholic Church.
The Parish Office, 02 4979 1101
Held on the fourth Monday of every month commencing at 7.00 pm usually at the St Benedict’s Centre Farquhar St, The Junction (February to December). Parking available at the back of the building.
Our main activity is to discuss contemporary social justice issues of interest during our monthly meetings. We try to keep Catholic teaching in mind in these discussions. A significant immediate benefit of our discussions is that they help us develop our own opinions. On issues where we reach a consensus, we decide to take action such as initiating correspondence or arranging a speaker.
St Benedict’s parishioners and anyone from surrounding parishes are welcome as a member of our social justice group. About ten people usually attend our monthly meetings, with many more when we have a guest speaker.
Advent and Lenten Groups
In these small groups, parishioners pray together, aiming to deepen our understanding and love of Scripture and to experience friendship and support as they prepare for Christmas (Advent groups) and Easter (Lenten groups). The focus of the program is usually the main gospel readings for each year.
Information about Advent and Lenten groups is featured in the Parish Bulletin in the lead up to each season, and is also found on the Parish website each year.
