The readings for this Sunday tip us upside down, in ways that are counter-cultural! In the
first reading we are encouraged to act with humility as attentive listeners. The psalm praises
God’s care for those we place on the margins of our social and ecclesial institutions. In the
second reading Paul speaks of the heavenly Jerusalem, a wondrous place where Christ-like
qualities reign in our hearts, homes, neighbourhoods and nation. In the gospel Jesus
cautions that we should not exalt ourselves, but rather, associate with, honour, and be
transformed by those who are powerless and under-served.
