In the Old Testament, in Jesus’ time and also during the medieval period and since then, there have been clerics who betrayed their calling, causing many to fall away from the faith. In today’s Gospel, the Lord specially recognises this problem in the case of the scribes and Pharisees, but assures us that the truth and value of His teachings and graces, channelled through the Church, are not diminished by these things.    Fr John
