As we begin Holy Week each year with our celebration of Palm Sunday, we may be stunned by what appears to be an incredible display of human duplicity, with crowds crying “Hosanna in the highest!” one day followed by “Crucify him!” just a few days later. Some years ago, the great scripture scholar, Pope Benedict XVI helped put things into perspective for us, by pointing out that these cries came from two very different crowds of people.
